Natural Hormone Therapy

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is the replacement of deficient hormones with hormones that are chemically identical to those that the body naturally produces.

Customized doses of hormones have improved the quality of life for millions of women who suffer from hormonal imbalance. The ideal process for achieving hormonal balance includes an assessment of hormone levels and a complete evaluation of signs and symptoms.  If replacement is deemed necessary, deficient hormones will be tailored to a patient’s individual needs.  This includes tailored dosage, dosage form and schedule to optimize outcomes.

What are Natural Hormones?

"Natural" hormones simply means that the hormone has the same chemical structure as the one naturally produced in the human body. Examples of "Natural" hormones include Estrone, Estradiol, Testosterone, Progesterone and DHEA. Conversely, "synthetic" hormones refer to hormones that are chemically different in structure from the hormones our body naturally makes. Examples of "synthetic" hormones include Premarin, Prempro, Estratest, Provera, Activella, Ogen and all birth control pills.

As many women approach menopause (peri-menopause) the ovaries produce less estrogen. During this time women may experience hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, urinary tract infections and emotional changes such as depression and irritability. Estrogen replacement may help relieve these symptoms and have a positive effect on bone health.

Progesterone is another important hormone in the balance of women's health. Many women will experience PMS symptoms, such as cramping, bloating, headaches, mood swings and lack of sleep. The two weeks before menstruation begins, a woman should produce a surge of progesterone. When there is an imbalance between the estrogen and progesterone levels, PMS symptoms may occur. Hysterectomized women also suffer from the imbalance between the estrogen and progesterone levels. Complaints of depression, insomnia, decreased sex drive, breast tenderness and fatigue often present themselves. Simply adding progesterone to the patient's therapy may aid in the relief of symptoms.

In women, testosterone is a vital hormone not only for the libido response, but also for muscle mass production, energy, body fat metabolism and an overall sense of well being. Women produce this hormone just like men, but in a much lower concentration.

Hormone Testing

Saliva Testing

Saliva testing is a convenient, inexpensive, and above all, accurate means of testing steroid hormones. Scientific studies have shown a strong correlation between steroid hormone levels in saliva and the amount of hormone in the blood that is active or “bioavailable.” It is this fraction of total hormone that is free to enter the target tissues in the brain, uterus, skin, and breasts.

Saliva testing can be done anywhere anytime. Testing that relies on blood drawn in the doctor’s office makes it harder to obtain samples at specific times (such as in the early morning) or multiple times during the day. In addition, hormones in saliva are exceptionally stable and can be stored at room temperature for up to a week without affecting the accuracy of the result. This offers maximum flexibility in sample collection and shipment.

Hormones tested in the saliva profiles include:

  • Estradiol

  • Progesterone

  • Testosterone

  • DHEA

  • Cortisol

Blood Spot Testing

Blood Spot testing is the future of blood testing. The process requires only whole capillary blood from a nearly painless finger prick and several tests can be run from a single sample. Blood spot testing provides results on a par with those from serum tests but without the cost and inconvenience of conventional blood drawing. In addition, collection times can be optimized for fasting baseline hormone levels and assessment of HRT dosing and diurnal hormone testing.
Tests offered in the Blood Spot Profiles include:

  • Thyroxine (T4), free

  • Triiodothyronine (T3), free

  • Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)

  • Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPO)

  • Testosterone, total

  • Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG)

  • Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA)

  • Insulin-like Growth Factor (IGF-1)

  • Estradiol (E2)

  • Progesterone (Pg)

Putting saliva and blood spot test materials together in one combination kit makes it convenient to collect hormones of the three major glandular systems--reproductive, thyroid, and adrenal--on the same day at the optimal time.

The Comprehensive Profile is recommended for men and women with signs and/or symptoms of menopause, andropause, adrenal and thyroid dysfunction.

Tests include:
In saliva: Estradiol (E2), Progesterone (Pg), Testosterone (T), DHEA, and the four diurnal Cortisols.
In bloodspot: free T3, free T4, TSH and TPO antibodies
