Customized Medications for People with Diabetes

Diabetes Mellitus is becoming an increasingly common medical problem. There are two main types of diabetes, commonly called Type 1 and Type 2. In both cases, blood sugar is elevated, but the cause differs, and therefore, there are different treatment options. Type 1 diabetes is characterized by a lack of insulin. The cells which produce insulin are destroyed, leaving the patient unable to adequately metabolize carbohydrates. Type 2 diabetes is a result of insulin not working effectively. Patients produce what would normally be more than adequate amounts of insulin; however, the cells in the body do not respond as readily to insulin. This leads to inadequate carbohydrate metabolism, and elevated blood sugar. In either case, properly controlling blood sugar is critical to improving both the quality and duration of a patient\'s life. Inadequate control can lead to kidney, nerve, and eye problems, among others. When treated appropriately, both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics can live long, normal lives.

Patients with diabetes usually take several medications and carefully monitor their carbohydrate consumption. Diligently managing blood sugar when sick is particularly important, as blood sugar often increases due to the stress of illness. However, some medications contain large amounts of sugar, which is often forgotten when counting daily carbohydrates. This can especially be a problem with sporadic use of over-the-counter liquids or syrups to treat coughs and colds.
