This leads to inadequate carbohydrate metabolism, and elevated blood sugar. In either case, properly controlling blood sugar is critical to improving both the quality and duration of a patient\'s life. Inadequate control can lead to kidney, nerve, and eye problems, among others. When treated appropriately, both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics can live long, normal lives.
 
Patients with diabetes usually take several medications and carefully monitor their carbohydrate consumption. Diligently managing blood sugar when sick is particularly important, as blood sugar often increases due to the stress of illness. However, some medications contain large amounts of sugar, which is often forgotten when counting daily carbohydrates. This can especially be a problem with sporadic use of over-the-counter liquids or syrups to treat coughs and colds.
