| Avoid Sun Exposure from 10 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon. |
| Wear protective clothing such as a wide brim hat, sunglasses and loose-fitting, tightly woven clothing that covers your arms and legs. |
| Use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher, at least every 2 to 3 hours while in the sun. |
| Use cool cloths on sunburned areas. |
| Take frequent cool showers or baths. |
| Apply soothing lotions that contain aloe vera to sunburned areas. |
| Topical steroid creams may help with the sunburn pain and swelling. (Do not use on children younger than 2 unless authorized by physician) |
| Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. |
| Do not break blisters if they form. |
| Do not wear clothes that will rub against the sunburned skin. |
